About the Memory Variables section
Memory Variables tests how well you can store a small set of facts and then use them while doing something else. Early items show letters with values for a couple of seconds each and ask for them back in a new order. Later items add equations, so you are remembering and calculating at the same time.
It maps closely onto the job: a controller holds altitudes, headings and call signs in mind while working a different problem. People who struggle here usually lose values to interference from the next item, which is very trainable.
Every run is generated fresh, with three levels that ramp up the way candidates describe the real section. Practice mode lets you slow down and see each answer; timed mode keeps realistic exposure times.
Tips from practice
- Chunk pairs into a single picture or word (A3 as "a tree") instead of rehearsing digits.
- On equation items, write the chain in your head in the order you will need it.
- Rehearse quietly between items rather than replaying the whole set every time.
Common questions
- How long is each value shown?
- Candidate write-ups mention around two seconds per item. Our timed mode uses a similar exposure, and practice mode lets you lengthen it.
- Are these real ATSA questions?
- No. Every item is generated by our own software from public descriptions of the section. It is practice for the format, not a copy of the test.
